The victims of this tragedy were from northern and sub-Saharan Africa, all seeking refuge in Europe. Their perilous Atlantic crossing aboard a fishing boat ended south of Tenerife, where the boat was discovered adrift.
Alerted by the situation, the Spanish authorities of Salvamento Maritimo, in collaboration with the cruise shipInsignia, intervened urgently. Although 68 survivors were initially rescued, one sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward.
The challenges of sea rescue
The deplorable weather conditions made the rescue operation even more complex. The Insignia ship, which can accommodate up to 670 passengers and was in the middle of a world cruise, recovered three bodies. However, bad weather prevented the repatriation of two other bodies.
